I've attached a large pic of Willie's torn lip. His very bruised rostrum occured when ever he was put in something with mesh siding. His ouside enclosure and his car carrying case. I keep an rx antibiotic on it..Amerex (?). His becoming frantic at those times began when he went into season. Two vets have seen the bruising, feel sorry for Will, but aren't worried about it. What I'm worried about is the piece of lip that is hanging down. I saw that a while ago and thought it would heal well by itself. It hasn't. With antibiotics and patience do you think it will heal or should I take Will to his vet. Do you think the vet might put a stitch in it? I know the picture is gross, but i wanted you to see the tear clearly. Poor Willie. Thanks! A PS. The first picture was taken with a macro lens. I'm going to add a second picture below taken with just a regular lens. It doesn't look as bad w/o magnifying it.

Owwwww! I bet that is bothering him! Poor Willem sure has been thru it! I think I would see the vet. I would be concerned that it would catch on something and tear more.

Awwwwwww! Poor Willie!! Dang, that makes MY lips hurt just looking at that I'm with you, I think I would feel better with a stitch in the part hanging down, to make sure it doesn't get caught on anything and ripped further, or ripped off. I feel so bad for the little guy But I'm sure your kisses make him feel better and at least temporarily forget about it Your'e such a good Iggy Mom Nancy! ~Nan

I'd like to add that although he's been sick lately, that boy looks like he's gained some serious weight and grown quite a bit! All due to YOUR excellent husbandry Nancy!
What a handsom guy you have!

Thanks, Merlin. You are confirming what I thought might be a possibility too. Sometimes I see him rubbing his jaw on something. Yes, Willie has been through a lot. And he's not sure about me any more as I was the one with the dropper and syringe. So I'm not able to comfort him as much as I once did. I think the road back will be slow with him.

Nanshe, thanks for your kind words. I think Willie has gained a little. I wish he would let me comfort him. But he's just very nervous now. I can pat him in his cage and sing to him. And I play the music he loves. Today he's had the Crystal Singing Bowls. I haven't wanted to stress him more so I haven't been forcefull about picking him up. But maybe I'll try more. My husband can go with me to the vet on Thursday morning. That way I can hold him and he wont need to go in his carrier and perhaps bruise his nose more.

It would probably be good if your vet just trimmed that little chunk of skin off. If it has been hanging there for a day or two, or longer, chances are it won't rejoin the rest of the tissue underneath. I think its best to just have that bit removed so he can start with fresh growth. Necrosis and infections can arise from reattaching dead, or partially dead tissue. You're doing a great job with him Nancy, he looks really good other than his poor little lip. ;D

Thanks Sean. Willie has an appointment to see his vet tomorrow afternoon. My husband will have to be at work then, so I'm planning on taking him in a pillow case. He's eating pretty well now. Almost a whole turnip green leaf today. I'm glad he looks good to you.

Yup...I'm with IK. Left that long there is much less chance for the tissue to be healthy enough to heal back together with a stich. You can see the discoloration of dying tissue already and it would probably fall off of it's own accord at some point. It's gotta be sore when it catches on things...yeow! Even eating...when he does that... That light gives him the most AWESOME super- green hue!!

I took Willie to the vet today. He applied Applied Lanocaine to Will's torn lip and then snipped the hanging piece off right close to his lip. Put Statin on it to control any bleeding and gave me some Baytril to prevent any infection. Suggested Neosporin at least twice a day. I'm glad we got this taken care of. I think dear Willie will be more comfortable.
There is more on his anorexia that I'll post in the anorexia thread.

Nance -
Isn't Baytril what caused Willie to get so sick to begin with? Please correct me if I'm wrong - just wanted to point it out in case it was - would hate to see Willie take a step back healthwise after reading how wonderful he's doing now!

The best thing you can do is clean the area carefully with Betadine (Providone-iodine) and then apply triple antibiotic ointment 2-3 times a day. Watch it carefully for signs of infection.

Hi Nan~
It was the deworming medicine that caused the toxicity and loss of all Will's helpful bacteria. I think what you might be remembering is that in his toxic condition vet #2 didn't want to give his kidney something else to deal with so he suspended the baytril. Willie is eating like a horse now so I'm not giving him any supplements..except Nutribac.
kwd..I think you have been given very important things to check out in your igs environment by Iguanaking and care of his lip by Tesa. Willie's vet suggested I use Neosporin. Something about the size of the molecules.
Cutting up your iggy's food into small pieces might make it easier for him to eat.
Please stay in touch.
