What part did you have no idea about Lamar? This is a big page! It's a very good article...though the article never mentioned holding proper temps to keep the female healthy, as well (though on the care page it does). Dr. Wissman has been read for a long time for her expertise in iguana care. I'm also reading the avian section... ;D.

The article also mentions complications caused by poor physical condition...but it doesn't explain that it is instinctual behavior for a female ig to become MUCH more active during her gravidity. The way to prevent problems brought on by poor physical condition is to allow her plenty of space/opportunity for climbing, walking, digging, etc. That way she keeps in tip-top physical condition, and can lay her eggs without problems. At laying time...just for those who have female igs who haven't laid their first clutch yet (I know you have already experienced this Lamar )...I found a large, covered cat-box, filled with alfafa pellets to be a great nesting box. I just covered the entrance with a dark towel, and Mercury went in and laid 47 eggs in just under 6 hours. She almost drove me nuts in her constant search for activity, it was like having a human baby who just learned to walk....SOOO hard to keep her safe and out of trouble. Lamar, did you notice an increase in affection from Iggi when she was gravid? Mercury CONSTANTLY wanted to be pet and cuddled...then...on the final day, just before laying, she would become the b***h from hell. That's how I knew it was time to help her into her nesting box.

Lamar.... That is a great article! nice detail! Here's a pic of Thrasher and her "eggs" after she suffered preovulatory stasis which requires surgical removal. I elected to have her spade during the surgery. Herbie is now gravid and has me worried to death!

Heh...I can't blame you Tesa, Mercury always worried me. It looks like Thrasher must have been fairly early when you and the vet detected the stasis...she still looks somewhat like a normal ig. The sight of Mercury after laying her clutches never ceased to scare the hell out of me. She looked like something that would condemn me to prison on one of those ASPCA shows. All I could see was ribs. She pigged out and fattened up pretty quick though.
