I just woke up this morning and my Iguana has a pocket of blood in between his shoulder blades. There was a small cut(not sure from what) and when I was looking him over it broke open and clear liquid, the blood came out. He is eating and acting fine, but I cant get to the vet for a day or 2. I put a warn wet cloth on it to draw the "stuff" out, but a few hours later it was filled up again. I feel I should keep it draining till I get to the vet, but do you know what else I could do. It don't seem to hurt him, after it drains he kinda kicks at me if i mess with it but.....Can You Help??? Thank You!!

Is there anyway you can get a picture? If he kicks at you it means it's at least annoying, but may mot be too painful yet. If there anywhere on the inside of the cage you can feel that might snag his back that way? Carefully run your hands around the cage looking for sharp points...including anything he may crawl under and through.
Do you have any Betadine?

Pic would be great. Do you think its a scratch or possibly a puncture? Can you tell a little about your Ig, How big, overall health, cage temps? Make sure you keep the cage extra clean to help prevent infection. If your planning a trip to the vet is there any chance of sooner? Early treatment can make a huge difference especially for little Igs

I am not sure, I think it is a scratch but it is small, only about 1/4 an inch. He was fine when we went to bed and it was there in the morning. He is about 5-6 years old, we have had him for 6 month. He is about 3 1/2 feet long. He is at a basking temp of around 98. We are cleaning the cage often and cleaning him often also. Thank You for trying to help also, havent been able to find this kind of thing online.

His health is good, eating and sleeping well, good stools, it is like nothing is wrong but the pocket of blood. I know it can turn into infection, it don't look pussy or anything yet. It is not hard, but liquid.

Do you trim his claws?

If you have some Betadine - water it down so it looks like watered down tea. Flush the wound the best you can and place some neosporin on it. If you KNOW it isn't a cut from the cage - something has made this happen. If it's not a cut...then what? I won't be able to see the picture from work if you use anything but imageshack. I know there are other photo hosting sites that work, too...but most of the real popular ones like photobucket are blocked by filters. Imageshack used to be blocked but by a miracle I could see them again one day.

His back claws are not too short but that was one of our thoughts, he may have been able to scratch a sore.

Clean the area with the diluted Betadine 3x daily for several days. Keep Neosporin on between cleansing. I would still recommend a vet just for a well-check visit, but if it starts looking better after a couple of days then chances are it will heal well on it's own with a little TLC. BTW...welcome to the forum... ;D. Now - I'm going to bed...5 a.m. comes early.

when you say draining, do you mean helping it drain by putting pressure on it or by using a warm towel to keep it open? Prism's suggestion of Betadine and Neosporin is what I would stick to.

It broke open on its own the first time, but I have just been putting the rag on it to get it flowing. I hate to "push" it out as I don't want to hurt him.

The wound will kinda heal shut and the "pocket" will fill back up, I put on the warm rag for a few min and it will start ozing again.
