Plexiglass, its best to hold heat and humidity. Chicken wire can cause toes to be mangled or cut off.

Chicken wire also horribly disfigures faces as they rub on it. If you can afford the plexiglas...go that way. Make sure you provide vents for some airflow. Lights should be placed outside of the cage and on top and you can used welded wire for this.

Don't you want cross airflow from top and bottom but, how would you create this?

Warm air rises. I have two small vents at the bottom of the enclosure

Mine has vents at the bottom and top...but it's a prefab cage and already there. Even if I had built it...I would place the two at the bottom.

I guess I should have been more precise! As well as the vents in the bottom there is space at the top for air exchange as well

what type of air space are we talking about? having small holes that let air come in and out? I know that sounds stupid but, I'm just trying to get a picture of what type of venting and how big.

You can have vents that are an inch or two high that are about the same width as the sides of the enclosure. Put one at the bottom on the cool end, and one at the top on the hot end. This will give you good ventilation and air flow. Make sure to cover the vents with something to prevent him from getting out into areas that aren't iguana-safe. You can use a plastic mesh for this.

If you keep your house warm enough for your iggy, home depot/lowes carry a plastic 'chicken wire' type stuff. Its way cheaper than plexi, and lets all the air move. My Iggy has been climbing it for a year with no ill effects..
that being said, where he lives never gets below 75 humidity or 80 degrees (due to several fish tanks) so that is also an issue to keep in mind.
