Here is one example on how they break their toes and rip out their nails. In this pic Cleo is hanging on with just her back feet. Trying to harrass Hannibal in his cage.

What a goofball...;-) Cleo has some real balancing talent going on! You can sure see how she's using her tail, too.
It is true the nails can get caught and often get torn out. The toes seem to be sturdier than that, but they're still a concern. The toes are very flexible, and unless they just get completely stuck at the toe - the toenail will usually break off before the toe gets broken...;-)

I thought I would bring the subject up, just because they do frequently break nail and toes. When we got Cleo she was missing several of her front nails, and now I understand why! ;D. Just the other day I caught Hannibal hanging upside down from his shelf, by 3 claws trying to escape his cage (of course) I wish I could of got a pic of that. ;D

Sadly one of the reasons so many igs have damaged toes is due to the rough handling they get with some suppliers. Baby igs are often kept in mass in screened in cages. When it comes time to ship them out, the workers, being in a hurry, will go in, grab them, yank them off the wall without regard for any damage that they might do.

^^ I think that might've happened to Bowser. He's missing the end of one of his toes and it was like that when I got him.

Talk about hanging off their toes...Sancho did this just yesterday the retard! IT was actually quite humorous. I have him all set up in his new walk in closet enclosure and I had just returned Saturday from a trip to Montreal. He was just sitting on his shelf staring at me (I was sitting at my desk not 4ft away) and suddenly he got the urge to jump down from there (it's the standard height of a closet shelf, around 5.5') but second guessed his thought just as he started to go down and was suddenly hanging. He had only his tail and his longest toes on both feet holding him there and he couldnt' get back up. Needless to say I had to go and help him up (which I imagine was the goal) since he was eyeing me for so long...He just wanted attention. Silly guy.
