I guess you have to do what you have to do. Little extreme but works.
How did the ig fair as the tree was felled?
I would have started climbing tailing a line with a duffle tied to the ground end. But I have the harness and equipment to do that.

The PVC cage had a ziptie in the corner come off...we did not know it. The cut tree is NOT the first tree he climbed however. That was the fourth. The first one I thought I might be able to climb up after him. I got about 10' up and the branches were pretty thin! I climbed back down. Sent up fast moving projectiles...(.22s to be exact)...to break branches. This worked well...until the branch fell...onto another branch. He just climbed right back up...onto the sunny side of the tree to bask some more. So by the fourth tree...we realized we were going to have to cut the tree down. This tree is part of our windbreak on that side of the house...one of six. The escapee...caught:

I did not notice at first that this happened today. Fun Good Friday huh?
Either those branches were rather small or you are very patient to even try to cut down branches with a 22. But the Remington rounds I use do take out 1.5 inches in diameter at the back of a 2x4 when fired from a 6 inch barrel. And if you miss with anything larger that bullet is going for miles.
Not all pastic mesh is suitable for igs. I used black bird mesh from a garden center that, when he wanted out of his cage, Bob broke right through.
How was your ig after the ordeal?

Ya...fun Good Friday...get the day off paid...and I'm chasing down a non-compliant ig...
He's fine...sassy...crapped in his cage as soon as he was put in it. Thank goodness he waited to do THAT!
The mesh I use is a heavy extruded plastic. Very durable...used for fisheries...lasts a very long time. It was the ziptie that gave out for me...my fault completely. I didn't check to make sure it was still in one piece, but the female ig WAS using it inside up until last weekend when she went to her new home. Thought it was fine. It must have been snapped off when hubby and daughters boyfriend moved it back outside.

Whew! At least you were around to know where he went! That could very easily have been a disaster! Glad every thing came out OK. Except for the poor tree!

LOL...you shoulda seen me! There I am standing about where I thought the end of the tree would land...towel waiting to catch this ig that is coming with it! I had to run about 10' back so as not to get clubbed by the dang thing... This was not NEARLY far enough away... I am SO glad my kid can work the camera. It would've been great her getting me while I'm running for my life though... ;D

Holy cow! What an experience that must have been! I think Id have been too scared to cut down the tree for fear he'd get hurt during the fall. and to think, when I put Thrasher in a tree, the first thing she does is head right back DOWN! crazy lizards!

I was worried about the tree injuring Zair also...but I had no choice. I don't have the equipment Mark has...couldn't find a long enough stick to lure him down with grapes...and it was turning into evening with temps getting cold at night.
The top of the pine tree was very kooshy...and he's a big healthy boy... ;D I wonder if igs get butterflies!?
You better believe I checked him over good. I'd rather have an injured ig than a dead one from the still cold nights here in NW TN...or one of the hawks snacking on him for breakfast, lunch AND dinner.

Hi V- OMG, what an ordeal! Good thing it wasn't a telephone pole! LOL I've often stared at the 50' trees in my backyard and wondered what I would do if he every decided he wanted to get up that high. The thought gives me chills. Glad to hear everything turned out OK for everyone, except the poor tree of course. The tree did nothing and was cut-down in it's prime by an errant Ig. Oh, the tragedy. Great work on your part though!
