As some of you people know I’m an experienced iguana owner.......BUT..... I have only had males....I now have a female (Squiggy) that I love to death.. My question is how do they act during breeding season, Squiggy has gotten so weird all of a sudden, it’s kinda funny, but not, she has been attacking her towel when I dry her off after her bath I mean she grabs it and shakes it, Alligator rolls w/ it, walk in circles around it, stalking it....this isn’t the first time she done this with it......so I wanted to see what she would do w/ Lenny’s luv toy...OMG she grab it and acted like she was trying to mate w/ it.....HELP......... Is this normal for females to act this way? I know 100% that she is a female......Do you have any ideas or advice? Thanks

I've never known a female to do that with her towel after a bath. I've known the females to get very "affectionate" with their people, to the point of becoming annoying, but I've never seen an attack anything, except on the day of laying. Hmmm...maybe this is another behavior to document...since female igs do some weird stuff when they're gravid.

I was talking to another person about this, she has a rescue and she stated I know Squiggy is not gravid, but she did just start doing this after I let her and Lenny (male) run around together in the house....Lenny has never tried to do anything to her in fact he RUNS from her. They don't free roam all the time but when they do I keep a close eye on them..... Well hopefully it's just a phase she's going through...I don't know

Doh!!! Sorry, I definitely misread your earlier post. What color is the towel you are using for Squiggy, and does it have any stripes or patterns on it?
On second thought, I HAVE seen this behavior in a female before. I'll see if Roc's vid still has an active link to it. She posted it years ago about her female iggy.

In reference to the spayed ig...they often take on many male behaviors...and even physical characteristics. They have a huge hormonal imbalance and no longer produce the high amounts of estrogen of a female. Females also produce testosterone (just as males produce a small amount of estrogen). The testosterone will be the dominant hormone causing these female to male changes. As for Squiggy - I.K. made reference to the color of the towel that could have something to do with it. Some igs react pretty violently to certain colors and patterns. There is a female ig who died about a year ago...but her caretaker could not wear a white t-shirt without the ig lunging at the door in full attack mode. Others have said the same for certain prints or scents. It could even be what you wash her towel in. Process of elimination might find you the reason...but then again...you may never know...

Yup...white seems to be a color that igs don't react favorably to. I remember Herc going into war mode any time he saw my fingers which had been splinted and taped together following an "accident". The white of the surgical tape just seemed to bring out the demon in him every time.

Thanks, I.K. for the link, That is almost what Squiggy does, except she would grab it and shake it or alligator roll w/ it.... OMG last night I had Lenny out and he was on the table in the dinning (bad boy) and I forgot that Squiggy's door was open and she jumped on the table and pounced on Lenny, he didn't even have time to run.....and there she was acting like she was trying to breed him...the look that poor Lenny had on his face was like "OMG get her off of me, what is she doing" Well I managed to get her off without hurting him.... Far as the towel goes,, these are the same towels I've been using on them since I got them(iggys) in Jan 07....(washed of course) They are a light mauve color, but I have tried other towels and she does the same thing...I did try something different this morning, I used a fresh towel thinking maybe it had Lenny's or Squirt's scent on it, but she did the same thing....I just don't know, I'm at a loss.....

The only other thing I can think of requires a vet trip. Wild animals, especially, lash out if they're in pain. It would be a good idea to rule that out...and if nothing is there...just let her run her course of "death to towels" tirade.

My ig also flips out at any inanimate object that she hasnt been able to check out. ie. lick and realize its no threat such as nail clippers. So before toweling put it in front of ehr let her lick it and climb on it if need be to make sure what ever your using is not a threat. Hope this helps
