Our iguana, Iggi, loves cheese. We know that animal protein is bad in steady amounts, so we only give it occasionally. In an effort to make the treat less harmful, we have tried vegetarian cheese. That didn't work. We then tried imitation cheese. She seems to like it as much as real cheese. Does anyone know if it is better than real cheese? I figured since there is no cheese in imitation cheese, there would be no animal protein either. What do you think?

Hi Ig_Daddy-
My vote is bad, very bad. The "cheese" still contains fats that the Ig is unable to digest.
Try bread as a treat, less harmful and Igs really seem to love it!
AND NO TURKEY TREATS! LOL

ewwww I vote no on the Danish and the cheese! ;D I'm rather anal about Thrasher's diet. She has early signs of kidney disease....due in part to being fed animal proteins and junk. While it's very sweet to share with them, it's preferable to share something nutritious. Have you ever given him figs? Thrasher freaks over those!
Ig_Daddy? What do the package ingredients say? I'm thinking it's probably made from soybean??

I'd have to agree on NO cheese or danishes as treats. And I've heard of plenty of people feeding bread as a treat, but I have to say that I'd worry about the hydrogenated (sp?) oils. They're bad for us, so they're probably REALLY bad for our babies.
And what's up with PIZZA? Gil was on my shoulder the other day when the pizza guy came to the door. Gil just about went nuts! I put him on the chair so we could eat, but he was VERY anxious. The brat was practically BEGGING for pizza! I know it's bad, but I really wondered why he was so attracted to it. Any ideas?

I dunno Steph! I've heard iguanas LOVE pizza...but noone knows why. Imho, it's some spice combination. I have to admit **hanging head in shame** I tried to give Thrasher some one time cause Id heard so much about them going crazy for it.....and she'd have nothing to do with it! She's a wierdo! ;D

Poor old Gromit is deprived then, because he has never had cheese, pizza, bread or anything that isn't plant, greens or fruit. His favourite titbit (and he will do anything to get it) is gala melon.
I know that some iguanas do get 'human' treats, but I decided not to give anything like that to him. This is mainly because, before we adopted him, his previous owners had fed him on chopped cooked pork and so we are really lucky that he is so fit and healthy. He was castrated in 2001 and while the vet was operating he checked all his internal organs for any damage due to his previous diet and we were relieved to be told that everything is 100%.That's one lucky iguana and mightily relieved owners. ;D

Iguana's sense of smell is many times better than ours!

Good for Thrasher! I'm with you, Les. I haven't given Gil anything that's not veggie or fruit. I do plan on trying brown rice and seeing how he likes that. I didn't share the pizza, and next time, he'll be house-bound when the pizza man comes! I've concluded that Igs are as naughty as us humans: they REALLY like what they REALLY shouldn't eat!

aaaawwww Steph...I worded that a bit wrong. I didn't exactly "try to give it to her".....I showed it to her to see how she would react. I would have allowed a tongue flick, but not a bite. My brother gave her a bite of chocolate cake once when I had my back turned tho. He won't be doing that anymore.

I'm afraid to even let Gil give it a little flick... he's so stubborn that he'd probably bite my hand off to get a piece! lol
