I have two questions. We recently had one of our human heating pads we use on our free roamer, short out, and scorch. Has anyone used another electric heat source for a free roamer? I was thinking about these reptile under-tank heat strips, but I don't know anything about them. Second question: I am thinking of buying a 2 light socket light, by ReptiSun ( I think), called the bi-light. It was orginally desogned for two incandescent lights, one for daytime basking, and a colored night light, for heat. At PetSmart, I came across a UVB florescent light, that is one of the curly compact design, that screws into an incandescent light socket. I was going to replace the 18 inch florescent fixture that we currently use, with the bi-light fixture, but use a CHE in one socket, and the curly compact UVB bulb in the other. What do you think? Will this work? The problem I have is there are no % UVB listed on the packaging, although it may be in the instructions. Does anyone have any experience with these new types of UVB bulbs? Particularly the % UVB, so I don't get a light with less than 5% UVB. Thanks.

CHE's require that the socket be ceramic also....so you need to check that out. Otherwise it'll just melt the socket. I have a feeling they will be made of plastic. I'll see what I can find on the % for the "curly bulb" and get back to ya.

Yep, James is right. I had a curly (spiral flourescent until I broke it. I haven't replaced it yet..am using the PowerSuns for heat as well as UVBs. BUT! the spiral gave me more UVB rays than anything else so far. (Except the 48" Reptisun 5.0 tubes) Anything less than 20 watts is a WASTE. I don't know if they make stronger than 20 watts. I'm sorry to say i don't remember what the meter read when I was using the spiral light, but i had it about 11-15 inches from Will and was steadily getting 50+ readings. Just make sure get one designed for reptiles. Some aren't. I hope this helps. And remember..no heat from the spiral.

For heat I use an electric space heater and a hot mist humidifier. Using wood and a stamped steel mesh I built a "cage" for the heater and humidifier. Then painted it with exterior paint because of the extreme heat and humidity. I took the design for a radiator cover and altered it for my needs. Remember, wide and low so it is hard to tip over.

Mark Thanks, but Iggi is a free roamer, that basks on the back of our couch. Here is a picture of her heating setup. Please excuse the sneeze marks on the window. I'm looking for something better (safer), and bigger than a heating pad. Lamar (igdaddy)

Hey. Lamar..please tell me what I'm looking at. It's a great pic and I've got it as far as the back of your sofa ( great drape btw. I really like it), But I'm not sure what I'm seeing beyond that. Looks good though. Your starfish is wonderful!

Ig_daddy here is the info I had in the Meter site database.
It's very sparce. When my spiral bulb was new I was getting 50 UVBs at 8" I think it held it's strength for a long time. It was okay to have it that close to my ig because it gave off negligible heat. Hope this helps!

I wanted to show him I can't set up a humidifier on my couch. The pink stuffed starfish is Iggi's buddy, which she uses as a pillow while she basks/naps

Hi Lamar-
Have you ever thought about a heated blanket? If the heating pad is too small, maybe a twin size heated blanket can be folded to fit the couch and offer a nice warm place for the Ig.
Also, I've seen "Heat Tape" on some reptile supply sites that works pretty well. Similar to UTH, but more flexible in application.
Rex freeroams and bask on top of his now empty cage. I use a heating pad for it. He seems to like it enough. He just turns periodically to get another section of body warm.
Just a thought.

An under tank heater should work fine under the sheet, of course monitoring the heat output at any given time. I have never used a rheostat, but it may work for one of the under tank heaters.
One comment on the spiral UVB bulbs. They do have a fairly decent UVB output, but they don't cover much area over the ig. It's a very concentrated area that actually receives the emissions.
Many igs still get MBD using these things...especially bigger igs who really need the length of the tubes for a full body benefit.
Even though the tubes have a lesser UVB output on the ends they do still emit readings and this is where the ig benifits from them where the spiral cannot.
