What is the general consensus on when to replace your UV bulb? I am currently using the 48" ReptiSun 5.0 and have read the I should replace it anywhere from every 6 months to once a year.

I changed my tubes every 6 months, but am using the Mercury Vapor bulbs now, and they last a lot longer!
I hope this helps!

Yes, unfortunately without a UVB meter, there is no way to know if the light is still emitting beneficial UVB or not. 6 months is the suggested interval for replacement of fluorescent tubes.

Honestly...the UVB meter is SO worth it's weight in gold. It is an expense at first, but it does pay for itself in about 18 months...or when you would normally change out your tubes.
I have had my Reptisun 5.0's for almost a year and a half now. They are very much on the low end now, but I'm using the Mega Ray in conjunction with them. But the Reptisun's were plugging out a 50 on the meter and were bought in April of 2003.
This is extreme and most UVBs deteriorate in much less time. But this is a good example of WHY the meter is such a good investment. I would have discarded two perfectly good bulbs way before I needed to.
