Ricky, Is it just a basking bulb or is it the uvb bulb? If it is only a non-uvb bulb, then any regular household bulb will do as a replacement. There is no substitution for the uvb bulb The ones the pet industry sells as "basking bulbs" are usually a full spectrum type that provide light (visible and uva) and sometimes enhance color. I use the G.E. Reveal bulb for this purpose. It gives a more natural looking color of light.

If it is not the UVB generating bulb a regular household bulb will work just fine. All it is providing is heat. All you are paying for with the petstore bulb is fancy packaging!

ok thanks, yes it is just a basking lamp, not a uv tube, i have one of them but it was the basking lamp that blew
i put a normal light bulb in earlier until i got a reply becuase i wasnt sure if it was the same but i'v noticed the temp is better now with the normal bulb then it was with the basking lamp so as long as its ok to use i'll stick with it
the basking bulb cost loads couldnt believe how quick it blew
thanks for the replys, sorted ;D

I had that exact same problem with my bulbs...I had bought the bloody things then not a couple months later it died. I went through about 5of those for every 1 regular bulb I would use. I thought it was my fixture but they did the same thing with a brand new fixture! Amazing how the marketing of reptile stuff can make you think you're getting something worth the money you've spent but then turns out to be a totally useless product...Wish there was a way of ridding the world of crappy products.

Wish there was a way of ridding the world of crappy products. Crazybaby, There is, it's called informed shopping. The more information you have before you purchase, the better chance you will not buy a piece of garbage. Now, if we could just get the manufacturers and retailers to provide this info, it would be a better world. Until that happens, probably about the time hell freezes over, we just have to do as much as we can being individuals. Forums like this are a valuable source of information and lend well to informing potential consumers of wasted buys, before we part with our hard earned dollars. If enough people quit buying a product it will soon go off the market as it's not a profitable situation for the companies involved.

I'm using a mega ray SB that produces both uVB and heat, Iggy loves it. I also have a 75 watt halogen flood for a little more heat, he occasionally hangs out under it. If the lamp isn't for UV then a run to Home Depot will save you some money. My turtle tank has a 75 watt holgena bulb that wne tofr a full year running 12 hours per day, and it puts out plenty of warmth.

Well no matter how informed anyone is about a product there are always glitches and problems that come out in a newer product. I had done plenty of research on the brands and they came up as solid items that people used and thought well of. I however, (after the fact) disagree and will never use them again. lol I also have a Mega ray light that works wonders! I have yet to get through a year of having it but so far so good. Sancho loves it and that's all that matters! ;D
