I am going to play the devil's advocate here. Being that this iguana is 8-9 yrs old...the chances of renal failure are incredibly high here with the previous care it was given.
The money being poured into this sweet thing could be astronomical...the vet bill will be somewhat comparable to the supplies needed to try and fix this broken ig. With the vet visit being $30, Meds $45, and a blood panel $100...this is nearly $200. The supplies will cost close to this for a total of nearly $400, more or less.
If your parents are willing...you can lengthen the life of your friend, but I will not even take a guess at for how long. An ig this old with it's past care often die right around this age. If this was a younger ig...I would say...and have said...this ig can be saved...but this one I am not so sure.
Go to the vet first and get the blood panel done...get meds for his mouth...and then go from there.
Tesa gave you the wrong link. The "Zoo" kit is not the one you need. This one requires a UVB meter to use and can only be used NO CLOSER than 3 feet. reptileuv.tripod.com/megarayflood.htm is what you would need...for $75. Replacement bulbs are $45.
Diet is only 1/3 of the battle. Temperatures and UVB are equally important. It does no good to have any one of these things right...or even two. You need all three or the other two don't count.
Temps need to be 92-96 in the basking area...75 in the cool area and night time temps. UVB needs to be at least two Reptisun 5.0s...4' long.
I wish you luck with whichever decision you choose. Honestly...if it were me...knowing what I know about older igs and previous care...I would probably euthanize it...but then again...there is always a chance if you have enough hope, patience, and a serious dedication and aggressive therapy from the right vet. And yes...you do need a special vet for the treatment of a very sick iguana. Where are you located and we might be able to help.
