I was posting it to Melissa...to give her a serious truth about what this stuff can do. Melissa~Manufacturers are horrible people. They just want to sell as many of their products to as many people as they can...even if it means falsely labeling something to make people think it's safe to use for a particular animal. Bark IS ok for some species...just not animals with sticky tongues. Even those who use them for snakes generally feed the snake in another box to keep them from ingesting this stuff accidently. Stick with newspaper... .

Well Zeke seemed to be fine before with the bark.. We don't have bark yet for him.. But last night my dad put up an advertisement for Zeke.. He wants to sell him.. The smell has been so overwhelming, i think its the reason why i've been sick lately :S But I told dad that I refused to let Zeke go to just anyone.. I told him that I'm not letting him go unless I know for shore that the new owner knows about lizards.. I'll end up interviewing them on the phone first..

Not all igs get impacted...but many, many of them do...and some die from it. Enough of them die that it is a serious concern. Zeke is fine now, but will he stay that way...will he be one of the ones to eventually ingest enough...or ingest a large enough piece, that problems will arise? It's just a ticking time bomb issue. If you have done all of your reading, you would find on ALL of the good sites...ALL of the ones I had given you...say not to use it.
When you talk to these people who are interested in the ig, there are questions you can ask...I can give you some to start with:
1. Do you realize how big iguanas can get?
They should answer you up to 6 feet.
2. Are you aware of the special lighting requirements they have?
They will need a UVB source. The packaging MUST SAY it provides UVB. Either the Reptisun 5.0 or Iguana Light 5.0 flourescent tubes, or the Mega-Ray EB.
3. Do you know what temperatures are required?
The temps will need to be 92-96 in the basking area and can be done so by using a regular house bulb. The cool end and night can get as low as 70.
4. Do you know what they eat?
You have a list of what they eat: Collard green, mustard greens, turnip greens, dandelion greens, green beans (chopped), winter squashes such as acorn or butternut (shredded), red or yellow bellpepper. NO ANIMAL PROTEIN! Make sure they know this.
5. Do you know what size cage iguanas need?
They will need to know it has to be a 6x6x3, minimum size for an adult.
6. Do they know how long igs live.
They should answer about 15 yrs.
You will also need to tell them has MBD. This is very important. They will need to care for him accordingly.
Last, but not least, guide them here if they have Internet access. We will continue to help Zeke any way we can.
These will help you find the right home for him. Good Luck Melissa. And you have really done well with what you had to work with. He would be dead right now if you hadn't taken over his care...

I don't understand the smell problem, Melissa. Where is it coming from? Did it smell before Zeke went in? Is his enclosure ventilated? Would a small fan help to disperse the smell?. how about an air freshener? There Are so many on the market now. NOT in his enclosure but in the room around it. There must be some way to solve this problem so you can keep him. But maybe, you know, the smell might be bothering Zeke, too. Think, think, think, there must be a solution to this. Prism's TV enclosure doesn't smell. (I don't think) Why does yours?

I also have a different animal in it. Snakes have a different smell, but he has had the green reptile carpeting so it didn't soak into the unsealed wood interior. I can wash the carpet and what smell is there is gone. If I'm not mistaken, Melissa said it had smelled from the previous occupants. There are several products that are designed to remove the actual bacteria that causes the odor which is harmless to pets. It's called "Get Serious". I have not tried this product personally, but I have used some like it many years ago. I believe Pet Smart sells this product. They do have a website at www.getseriousproducts.com. You cannot buy the product from here, but they do have a list of distributors.

Hey, Melissa...did you see Prism's post above this one. Sounds like there's some hope for getting the smell out of your 'cage'. That sounds like the best option now. Good luck!!!!

Well the people that had the enclousure before us had about ten anoles in it.. And the bottom of the cage was just wood, so the urine from the lizards was absorbed into the wood. I checked out the site for the products that you listed, and theres no distributers in my area :S I think it would really help, but I can't get it out here :S

I know your dad is a cop and worried about security and stuff like that, but is there a way you can order it online? There are other products available, too. I know the states is not the only country that sells this type of stuff.
Call around to the pet stores you have...even those not close...and see if they have an enzyme-based odor eliminator. Make sure they know you need a natural eliminator.
