Well, hubby and I spent 4 hours in the emergency room last night waiting for stitches to be put in hubby's right hand. Two middle fingers got bit very badly. I have to admit i was so furious with my husband, the reason being, i can't count the number of times i have asked him to wear his leather gloves when messing with Narcy, I can't count the number of times i have asked him to be careful when Narcy is very obviously in a pissy mood (hissing, gaping mouth) and the response is always 'i'm being careful'! Once again last night i was sitting at my computer to the side of Narcy's cage while hubby was busy petting Narcy, and from inside the cage i could audibly hear Narcy hiss at him TWICE, and then when hubby went to pull his hand away to leave the cage, Narcy lashed out and got him. The middle finger (which is the one i told hubby he could show Narcy from outside the cage!) has a long, very deep laceration that doc chose to leave open, a deep laceration to the tip of the ring finger, and a flap of skin from knuckle to knuckle that had to be stitched back in place and may wind up dying anyway. Doc said there could be some reconstructive surgery is that happens. The miracle of the whole evening? Right before we left the emergency room, hubby apologized to me, said i was right to be angry with him, and he should have listened to me!! I don't think he is going to try and 'socialize' Narcy anymore. . .the 'nasty iguana' is my baby alone now. And hubby gets a week long 'vacation' from his mechanic job now. . .

OMG! Diane I'm SO sorry!! If you don't mind, I'm gonna sticky this thread so it will stay at the top for awhile. We talk alot here about our "cute little babies". I think it would be good to have a not so gentle reminder to folks (particularly newcomers) that these guys can be dangerous.

I'm sorry to read that too, Diane. If your hubby recovers enough to use his hand in a week, he can call himself lucky. I wish him a speedy recovery, I've been down that road a few times myself.

Thanks, Tesa. Yes i would appreciate it if you would make it prominent. I know i am usually such a pessimist in my posts, but after this past year with Narcy i really can't be anything but . I will probably take a pic of hubby's hand tonight when he puts a fresh dressing on it and post it to my website. Will probably be there by tomorrow for those of you who are morbidly curious!!

Diane I am so sorry to hear this! I hope everything works out for your hubby and the use of his hand is not affected. Tesa I agree we need to have some stuff like this for the newbies to see. Let them see exactly what can happen so they can be prepared and not get caught out of the blue.

I will post the pic here as well, Tesa. I was so wishing i had my camera with me when we were in the emergency room last night and the doc had the flap of skin laid over with hubby's raw muscle exposed ! That may have truly turned some stomachs though. . .thanks to all for your concern.

Ooooo....OUCH! I can see he learned a valuable lesson with this one. He is gonna be SO sore for awhile. I wish him a speedy recovery.
These pictures are so important. I got permission to use a picture from the GIS of the picture of Sue's hand full of stitches to use for my educational board. I also think it's important to see what an ig is capable of. I often stress this hazard of owning igs.
OUCH again...WOW...*shivers*.

OUCH!!! The bite pattern almost looks like your hubby shoved his fingers down Narcy's throat. Well...the good thing is that the severe damage is not at the fingertips. There is always A LOT of nerve damage that goes along with a bad ig bite. Being a guy who works with his hands also, I know the importance of good sensitivity in the fingertips. He'll be able to get back to work very soon, I think, but the middle of those fingers are going to feel a little strange for him for probably the next 18 months. (Numbness/coldness that comes and goes for no apparent reason). I know its bad, but it would have been much worse for his livelihood if Narcy had gotten his fingertips. Again, I wish him a speedy recovery.

eeewww! It does look like your hubby was sticking his fingers down Narcy's throat. Why can't our husbands just listen to us before they get hurt? I'm sure glad he wasn't hurt worse.

Like i said in my initial post above. . .the miracle of the evening was hubby even ADMITTING i was right to be mad and he should have had his gloves on! he actually went to the family doc today for a follow up and the news was basically good. He doesn't seem to think the skin on the ring finger will be a total loss, probably just the very top layers will slough off. all said, with the size of the ig that bit him, he got off pretty lucky. (would've been luckier if he would have listened to his wife - just had to say it!)
