we recently traded our 3 wheeler for an abused iggy. I'm glad we got her because her owners were very unclean people. she was in a 10 gallon tank with a heat rock that took up half of the tank. The tank was infested with roaches, I MEAN INFESTED! I almost cried when my fiance brought her home. she is very badly burned from the stupid rock, she has no toe nail on her front feet, and she had no light. We cleaned out her tank with boiling hot water until no roaches were left, then we cleaned it with mean green and then with hot bleach water. We gave her a bath, which she loved, and gave her some light from our other ig. She is doing much better, she is very active now, before she was as stiff as a board, she looked fake. Now she is a beautiful color of green. Her name is Lizzy. Her burns are bad and we were wondering, is there anything we can do to help her scales grow back? Oh, we put her back in her now very clean and sanitized tank, but we are moving soon and we have the supplies to make Lizzy and Gomer a big cage for each of them. And what is best to put on the cage, we were thinking plastic screen, but we wanted to ask first to make sure.

First off, welcome to the Zone! I'm so glad you found us!
It makes me sick how some people care for living things... and SO glad you adopted Lizzy. She's already better off!
As far as covering the new enclosures, I recommend solid sides because they will help you retain the proper temps and humidity. Plexi or acrylic. Mark (one of the members here) uses clear vinyl "fabric" for his enclosures. I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions.
Take some time to look around and feel free to ask questions... we're here to help!

IMO the best thing for her burns is take her to the veternarian. Even if she didn't have burns, she would need an initial wellness checkup. Given the living conditions she had to endure, she may need treated for other things such as internal parasites, nutritional deficiencies (or MBD given she had no light), abcesses, ect... I sure hope she hasn't been eating those roaches. If she ate them on a regular basis that could cause some future kidney problems--nonvegetable protein.
For the burns, I would take some antiseptic (like betadine) and clean the wounds. Then I would put some antibiotic cream (like silvadine) on them. Or some burn cream. If you don't have those things, you should be able to find them at any pharmacy department.
Thank you very much for rescueing her. Please keep us posted on her condition. I do love happy endings.
Have a terrific day and good luck.
Marie
BTW I love Garfield.

Hi "Parents" It appears other members have already answered your questions. (gotta love em!) I just wanted to commend the two of you for taking Lizzy in. It sounds as tho Lizzy was in a place VERY similiar to where my Thrasher was. Here's a pic of Thrasher when I got her (she was 4 yrs old....SO stunted in growth) And what she looks like now. Proof that your love for Lizzy and proper care can do miracles for her. Welcome to IZ.

I would recommend a trip to the vet. Sometimes with burns the damage extends far beyond just what you can see on the skin. Sometimes the internal organs can also be damaged if the burn is severe.

I am offering no more advice because everyone else has already said as much as I would have said...but I too would like to commend you on taking in poor Lizzy. You may have a long road of recovery ahead, but you will be fulfilled doing it. The world needs more people like you ....best wishes and Welcome to Iguana Zone. Lyn

Poor Lizzy I'm glad you took her in, now she can get better. GREAT JOB!!! ;D Since she was living in such horrible conditions and has burns and other visible wounds, I agree with everyone else, a vet visit is definitely needed. He'll probably want to start her on a course of anti-biotic injections because of the burns and other wounds. How is her appetite? Does she seem to be eating well?

Oh...one thing I just remembered. On the new enclosure, if you use plexiglass (like I do for my enclosure windows), it'll be a good idea to use two sheets of plexiglass. When they get bigger, they can break the 1/8" stuff with a good tail slap...Hercules has done this twice already. Once with a tail slap, the other time by swinging from the top ledge and repeatedly kicking his window.

Parents..it warms my heart to hear how you have taken Lizzy into your home and into your hearts. I am so glad for her. I hope one day to be able to give to an ig what you're giving to Lizzy.
And Tesa...you must be thrilled at how Thrasher has thrived under your care. It's so wonderful! Congrats!

VEt visit first off, as others have said. Burns often go much deeper than the surface. Silvadene...which you can purchase from the vet...is an ecxcellent burn aid. I've never had to use it, but those that have and those in rescue, swear by it. This should be in every ig first aid kit...just in case...
