Ok thought i would put a new thread too. draco is fine, has a splint for her broken leg. vet said bones are fine it was just a freak accident. poor baby has this big ole splint on there that is blue and her leg is straight out from her body. it looks silly but i would rather have her look silly than in pain. she is on antibiotics, pain meds, and had a wormer. i will never get over this but i am glad that she turned out ok. the vet checked her out and said she is very healthy so guess thats a good thing. i do have to get better lighting for her. she said the screw in type lamps are no good that we need to get a flourescent bulb. so we are gonna get that asap. well wont keep babbling on just wanted to inform u all. thanks for the support and trying to make me feel better in a bad situation. ;D

How long does she have to wear the splint? Poor thing......must be very uncomfortable. What type of "screw in lamp" are you referring to hun? If it's one of those coil lights.....vet is correct. But there are "screw in" mercury vapor lamps that are great. (Fluorescent tubes will work fine too) also: stop beating yourself up

She has to have the splint on for 6-8 weeks I feel so sorry for her. But she gets along just great. A real trooper. I know but I just feel so terrible that this happened. I cried all night when it happened. That was the worse sound hearing that pop. She was so good at the vet. But when the vet brought her back in and set her on the table she came running towards me. It was so sad. Guess she wanted her mommy. lol That made me feel good. The vet said to get a light called a grow light. My husband got all the info since he is the one who will pick it up. Well thanks for your support on this terrible accident. This has been such a great place to come for info. Another THANKS to all who got this site up and running. Has helped me alot!!!! ;D Oh and I am still not 100% believing that draco is a female. Guess the vet would know but she just looked at the pores.

Hun I'm almost positive that the vet has given you some bad information. I can't find ANYTHING referring to Grow lights emitting UVB. I STRONGLY recommend you disregard his advice and get either of the bulbs listed in the link I gave you above. It might also be a good idea to refer the vet to that same link. He evidently doesn't understand the difference between UVA and UVB. Are you able to obtain the X rays and scan them? I'd kinda like to take a look at the bone density myself. (I'm from the Show Me State )

Do not use a grow light! Your vets info is seriously out of date! Grow lights are merely lights that are high in the red and blue spectrum of visible light. At one time they were thought to be appropriate. After all they make plants grow without exposure to sunlight. Subsequent information has scuttled that line of thought. They have nothing to do with reptiles! You need a specific UVB light, not a plant light.
Not necessarily. You wouldn't be the first person to have a vet act like they knew what they were talking about only to find out later they were blowing smoke at you. The suggestion to use a growlight is a big red flag!

Amen Merlin! I'm so glad you said that! (That's why I want to see the Xrays)

Yup...what Merlin and Tesa said. ;D A grow light isn't ANY good at all for providing UVB. I would also be curious as to how the x-rays looked. But, as I was told a few months ago, an x-ray isn't necessarily a good indicator of bone density, there can be quite a bit of bone loss before it ever becomes visible in the x-ray. Are you in an area where you can let Draco get some natural, unfiltered sunlight? I don't like to second-guess vets, but healthy iguana bones are EXTREMELY difficult to break, even in a little guy. That's why they can fall from 7 or 8 feet, or even higher, and bound away like nothing happened with that "I meant to do that" look on their faces. I agree with the others, don't beat yourself up, we all had to learn this stuff from experience also. You're doing a good job with him by coming here and asking for input. ;D

When Baby got her backfracture, my vet told me Baby's bones were great she was just getting old. I have heard that it is difficult for many vets to read bone density from the xray. Some are better than others at doing it. So I called BobMac and bought a MegaRay for Baby any way. It and me taking her outside in unfiltered sunlight is what I feel has made her improvement go so quickly. Also both Dragon and Baby love the lights. When the th first one was first put in they ignored it because like most iguanas, they hate change but a day or two later they were both wanting under it at the same time so I had to get another when Baby had her back injury. IMO the MegaRay would be a better choice. My vet has heard about them at least but doesn't know much about them yet--plan to give him the info.

I definately agree that the Megaray is the better choice. There are other options tho, so I don't want to sound as if it's the only one.

Well I may have been mistaken on the name of the lighting. My husband was the one getting the info and i just caught bits and pieces cause i was tending to draco. thats why he was there to get the info. let me double check with him and get the correct info on that. my mind wasnt there that day i was so worried about draco. sorry if i made some of u really worry but this is a good vet she seemed very well informed on iguanas. i will ask my hubby tomorrow and try to get something posted. she named to brands and i just for the life of me cant remember the names. i will post here again when i find out. i do remember her saying about UVB so i bet i am wrong
