He got startled and started an alligator roll. His tail got tangled in his leash and I guess it was too tight around part of his tail because he dropped itl. I knew that they dropped their tails but didn't realize how easily. He acted like he didn't even feel it. It was still hanging by a small piece of flesh. He did not even flinch or react when I cut it later. I cleaned it, put some antibiotic ointment on it and bandaged it. It seemed to bother me a whole lot more than him. He loss almost six inches. He was more upset about having to go back in the cage. So Baby is the only one now with a full tail.

Just keep the cage extra clean for about a week or so. Clean the wound with Povodine iodine (generic Betadine...much cheaper) 2-3x daily when possible. You did good... . You're baby will recover fine...

Awe Marie-
It happens. You care so well for them, it almost seems unfair you need to experience this.
Rex has never dropped his tail, much to our surprise considering kids handling him and many escape attempts. But the two rescues we took in both dropped their tails in the first month! LOL Couldn't keep a tail on them to save our lives!
It is quite an experience for an iguana owner to see that tail come off. I remember my son almost fainting as he held the still wiggling tail in one hand and a tail-less Rambo in the other! LOL
I froze the tails for, ummm, I dunno, guess I was gonna bury them at some point. LOL Reminds me I need to toss them out. LOL
Be well.

Jeez...only true, hard core animal people do this...lol. I grew up in my pre-teen years with frozen baby birds in our freezer from the rehabs Mom took in that didn't survive. I have personally had frozen rats in our freezer. Mom removed my brother-in-law's caimen that died in the icestorm of "93" only about 2 years ago from her freezer. He was going to have it taken to the taxidermist.
Too funny... ;D

I just threw Huff's tail away. I have what's important, Huff himself. I don't even bury my pets once they are gone. My thought has been that the body is just the container for the life within it. Even what happens to my own body when I'm gone doesn't matter to me. I told my family if they wanted to spend all that money spend it on me now--I'd enjoy it more. LOL

Exactly why my bro-in-law was going to have his caimen stuffed. I still bury all of mine. I figure even the shell gets to give life back to the Earth and have a special place to rest. It sure would be easier NOT doing that though. We have buried 2 large dogs and a cat over the last 2 months.

I rent and don't own (no yard) so I usually let the vet dispose of the body. I don't think I would want them stuffed.

My father has always had dogs but they are just pets nothing more. Mom never got sentimental about pets until after her stroke. She would get upset when I did as a kid. I think she would have had a fit if I tried to put a dead pet in the freezer--didn't want me digging up the yard either. For some reason I just always bonded with my pets.

I have a friend here in California that does a lot of ig-rescues... she lives in the forest, and when an ig dies, she wraps it in a dark colored cloth and places it high in a tree.
She helped someone find their "escapee" once and found it dead on a branch so she figures they'd rather spend "eternity" facing the sun than underground.
Fortunately she hasn't lost too many igs, though.

Marie Ironically enough, a stuffed iguana is what started my passion for this animal. When I was about 12 years old we vacationed in Alpaculco Mexico. On the beach there were men who walked around with stuffed iguanas, trying to sell them to tourists. Well, WE were tourists and my Mom bought my brother and one each. These were iguanas stuffed with sawdust and held together with internal wires. I LOVED that iguana, had it for decades until I lost it in the fraternity house I lived in. So, later I was married with kids and my youngest son said: Dad can we get one. So of course I said sure! Oddly enough, I attribute my love for this creature from that stuffed iguana I cherished for so many years. Of course, knowing what I do now, I'd beat the crap out of anyone trying to sell me a saw-dust stuffed iguana, but as a kid it sparked a feeling I carry with me to this day. Funny how we come to love this large, scary looking creature. ;D

The first time I seen Baby I said that she was so ugly that she was cute. That was my first reaction to an iguana. Once I started taking over her care she completely won me over and I fell in love with her. Now I think she is very beautiful--so are Dragon and Huff.
