Mites are actually fairly easy to prevent. If you have a mite-free reptile, as long as you don't introduce another reptile into the equation that has mites, you'll be fine. Mites can also get in on pieces of wood from outdoors that you end up using as a cage furnishing. Bleach solutions and even baking of such items will get rid of mites and their eggs before bringing the wood into the reptile's habitat. But, remember this...if you let so much as a single mite into your ig's habitat, you will have a HUGE infestation in only a couple of weeks. Mites are born "pregnant" and their gestation period is only a few days before thousands of offspring hatch and give birth to their own offspring (thousands for each of the thousands) days later. Yeah...mites are bad...you don't want mites, but they're easy to prevent. Worms, on the other hand, aren't quite as easy. They can come from the food, water, insects, and just about every place else you can imagine. Keeping your ig's habitat clean will prevent most infections from worms though, and make sure to wash those veggies thoroughly.

It's also good to have fecal test done each time you take your ig to the vet (semi-annual, or annually).

Mites are horrid! I had a infestation with my wd last year! I am not even sure where they came from but they were sure there!

Your ig can also get worms and mites from the outdoors and even from off of your shoes. If you remove your shoes using your hands (I just pop 'em off with my other foot... ;D)...and you do not wash first...you may have stepped in an area where an infected animal has been dropping cooties on the way and attaching to your shoe. The best medicine here...washing before holding...and keeping your shoes in an area away from a free-roaming ig.
