Probably the easiest, and best thing to use is a water- based Varathane to seal the basking shelves and other wood areas of your enclosure. I would say use at least three coats, sand lightly between, for a tough water resistant finish. Also, I'd pick the satin finish over the gloss (too slippery)
P.S. Make sure the finish is completely dried and is therefore odour free before putting in your enclosure. Usually a couple of days will do the trick, of course this varies depending upon temperature and humidity.

I used Fibreglass and epoxy throughout the cage. Its clean, invicible, water resistant and you can make it any colour you want. Problem is it took mine a week to dry, but there was no real strong odour.
