Yesterday we had Kyo out in the yard. He decided that he liked the neighbor's yard better. He kept trying to get into her flower beds Then he discovered her birdbath! Oh, what a sight. There must have been 10 birds lined up on the bird feeders waiting for him to get out of their bathtub! (the water gets changed every morning). And this is a lizard who HATES taking a bath! I betcha if I went and bought a bird bath, he wouldn't even look at it

I would be a little concerned about the ig being in the water that the wild birds are bathing in. The possibility of disease or parasites would worry me. Having birds myself I know they are not really concerned about defecating in the water and wild birds are crawling with ecto parasites. I'm not sure if they are transmissable to igs. I wouldn't chance it.

Good point Merlin.
I'm not sure about all of the parasites/bacteria, etc that birds can carry, but just to put some perspective on it they DO carry a cousin of TB. It doesn't attack lungs in humans, though; it can infest the spleen, intestines, eyes, kidneys, even cause abcesses in muscle tissue.
I'm not sure if igs could get it from birds, but it's definately NOT worth the risk!

I thought of the parasite thing AFTER he had done it He has not been allowed back. I bought one and set it up in our yard. Fill it just for him to splash in, then empty. He won't even look at it

I'm just surprised to read that an ig got anywhere near an area that had birds in it. Hercules, my male, absolutely the tough, fearless male iguana of legend...until he sees a bird... ...then he runs for the nearest cover and will go into a crocodilian "death roll" if you try to comfort him and explain that the birds won't eat him.
