Willem was down to eating about 3-4 tbsps of veggie mush a day. Again, only while I was holding him. I was giving him mush because of the injury to his rostrum.
I was lucky enough to find a very congenial and thorough herp vet about 20 minutes from home. He listened to all my concerns and then took over. I had been even worried about MBD because Willie's thighs were really plump and no longer handsomely muscular. So the vet accomodated me, though he was pretty certain I was wrong, and x-rayed him. The outcome was Willie is fine. All his organs are good and his skeleton is fine. I LOVED seeing it..... vertebrae all the way down his tail to the last inch.
After a fecal check he found hook worms. I think he'll begin to eat well again once we get rid of them. whew! He called his staff in to see Willie, because they don't have that many iguanas coming in. They found him beautiful. He is a brilliant green with turquoise. The vet also thought Willem has been traumatized. He rules out going into season early. My poor little guy rubbed his rostrum raw in his enclosure on the way home. It was bleeding and he had gouged out a chunk of flesh. The vet gave/sold me an anti-biotic creme for it. But now, it really hurts him to eat. I'll prepare some cream of wheat and peas for his breakfast and hope.

Do you have a food processor Nance? If so, you can run greens thru it so they are easier for him to eat. I'm worried about him having too much cream of wheat and not enough greens. Is he pooping ok? Is there alot of pee in it?

I've made mush of his greens and he won't even try. But I'll try them again. cream of wheat is loaded with calcium, Tesa, but I'm not sure about the rest. I found it in "Green Iguana The Ultimate Owner's Manual" by James W. Hatfield lll. I'll do the greens too later today. i feed him about 3 times a day because his mouth hurts. he is pooping at least once aday, but smalll amounts. I'm watching the liquid in his poop too, and there is still plenty. Nothing is like before, but I'm sure we can get back to that. So many thanks for your suggestions, questions and caring.

Hatfield's book is a great reference, but I have to disagree on using the cream of wheat. You should use a slurry that is loaded with greens and add some yummy flavor from one of his favorite fruits. Lots of igs enjoy very smelly fruit such as mango. Try that in the slurry. www.iguanaden.com/health/slurry.htm

Thanks for the thoughts on a slurry. Sounds like a great idea. Willie just walked away from the cream of wheat. too bland, I guess, even with pulverized greens, peas and beans. I think the slurry will work though. Thanks!

Sorry, Tesa, I just saw your note. truthfully, I don't know how he's doing. I get all hopeful and then he slides back again. His energy is good, he races around in his cage, but I think he's eating less than ever.Well, I just checked is bowl..mush from acorn squash, butternut squash, shredded greens and little pieces of red bell pepper for color. I would guess he might have eaten 1 tablespoon plus today. Looks like he plucked the greens out. Yay. I'll try the slurry tomorrow. Your suggestions are always welcome..
