I'm reading new and old threads and as I was reading thru Growth I couldn't figure out what STL and SVL stood for. Can somebody enlighten me?

STL- Snout to tail length, measured from the iguana's nose to the tip of his tail.
SVL- Snout to vent length, measured from the iguana's nose to his vent.

At one time several years ago...Zair had been constipated for about 5 days. I had him in the tub going through my usual waiting period so I could clean the mess I was hoping would come this time before he made poop soup in the tub with him still in it. That gets gross. Well...I had to leave the bathroom for a moment and from the other room I heard the loudest underwater BLAAAAAAPPPPPP you ever heard! I swear I could feel the reverberation!! THAT was the ultimate eruption!! I could see the relief in his little green face. He just laid there in bliss...and poop soup...

SVL is a more accurate measurement of an iggie's size as measuring including the tail can be deceiving if the ig has had any tail loss. Just FYI. --Roc

So when you measure to the vent is it to the top of the vent or bottom of the vent?

I usually just place a tape measure above Bob, eyeball alignment to his nose and to where the hind legs join the base of the tail, then round to the cm (inch if you want English units, yes 1/2 inch is closer to a cm but it does not matter that much).
1) We're not building a watch, just wanting a general number to give others a basis of how large/old the ig is 2) Without three people you won't doo much better than this when measuring a live animal that wants to explore the room anyway

You could be more accurate if you measured the Snout to Vent length hun. I have one ig (Herbie) that's 2 yrs old and longer (with her tail) than my ig (Thrasher) who is more than 5 yrs old.
