Hello all .We have been looking at this site for awhile and finally got around to signing up. Our ig's name is JIM (the lizard king) we got him from some folks who were going to "release him back into the wild" we live 40 min. south of Houston! We've been learning as we go. We took an old dog kennel and put some small screen all the way around so now he has more room to move, and climb, which seems to be a favorite pass time for jim. Jims about 19 to 22 inches long we haven't measured him yet. thanx for all the info here, M.D.M.H.Z and JIM

Jim is in a 4 ft.X4ft square dog kennel that we "modified" for him.His diet is collard greens and carrots and other greens that we pick up at the local H.E.B, somtimes bannanna, apples, grapes and other fruit. We were feeding him baby spinach till we saw thats not very good for him. We went to petco and bought the UVA/UVB light bulb, $30, OUCH!! for heat we have a 4ft. light on top of the cage that we turn on after he gets his UV treatment ,about 6 to 8 hours. Should he have the lights on 24/7 or let him have some dark time? He has 2 fairly large sticks in his house for climbing on and a large plastic bin for diving into which he does quite often he'll climb up on the stick above the bin and just leap off and land right in the water, tail first or head first depends on his mood. We'll have pics soon hafta run into town to get batteries for the camera. Thats about all for now any more questions just post 'em and i'll get backas soon as i can. M.D.M.H.Z and JIM

Welcome to IZ!!! ;D Jim's diet needs a few changes. The collard greens are the best food for him, so that is good to feed him every day. The carrots, apples, bananas, and grapes, on the other hand aren't that good for him. Its ok if their included in very small amounts on rare occasions, or as occasional treats. Try adding things like mustard greens, turnip greens, various types of squash (including pumpkin). Also, green beans are a good thing to add in a small amount to his daily food, it'll provide him a good source of protein. Your solid vegetables (anything other than the greens) should be either finely grated or chopped up in a food processor. You say you're using a 4' light for heat? Is that a fluorescent tube? If it is, it won't provide much heat. If we can see some cage pics, we can help you choose an appropriate heat source. The light AND UVB/UVA should be on a 12/12 on/off cycle. He'll need 12 hours of complete darkness so he can sleep (sleep will help him maintain his sanity...they get a little...err..."strange" when they don't get enough sleep in complete darkness ) What are the temps in his cage?

Thanks for the diet info ,we need to goto town in a bit anyways make a stop in the produce section and the dog food aisle. We also have a small space heater close to his cage it turns on and off according to the temp you set it at,the heater is for the room not just jim. The temp in his cage stays right around 78 to 81 hopefully thats alright. Thanks again for all the info Jim thanks everyone too. ;D M.D.M.H.Z and JIM

Just make sure you give the dog food to your dog, not your iguana. 78 to 81 is good for a low temperature. Your iguana will also need access to an area that is between 92 and 98 degrees, his digestion will only take place properly if his body temperature is 92 or above.

Some other food items you may find at H.E.B...(I think) is arugula, watercress and dandelion greens. From what I understnad, this store carries some of the harder to find stuff the rest of us wish we could get. I could be thinking of another store entirely, but if you can find these...add it to the diet. They're awesome foods.
What type of UV-B bulb did you get? If it's the tube style such as the Reptisun 5.0 (the best tube on the market), then you will need the added heat source. If you are using a mercury vapor, such as ZooMed's SPOT lamp, then no added heat is needed. Keep the lights on a timer and set them for 12/12.
