I'm new to this board...I was referred here by a current member, ig_daddy. I know him from kingsnake.com Many thanks to him for talking to me about my ig, Irwin! Irwin is my ig. I've had him for about 2.5-3 years and he is about 3-3.5 years old. Right now he is approximately a little over 4 ft. and 5 lbs. He has always been calm and sweet, but lately he has become very aggressive...which is actually what brought me here for advice. Along with Irwin I have several other pets....3 german shepherds (my babies), 3 red ear sliders, and 1 southern painted (all about 1 year old), 2 male rats, and 4 firebelly toads. As you can see, I love animals! I'm glad I was referred to this group and hope to make some new iggy pals!

Are you sure we aren't related??? I think I finally found someone who loves animals just as mush as I do....I'll tell ya the only thing keeping me from having more is our 860 sq. ft. house....(which will eventually change since we're looking to move right now!) I *really* like ferrets and cats...... ;D I just gotta make sure my husband isn't reading from behind my back....lol

There are tons of ferrets up for adoption when you're ready... ;D. They are cute, but require some time and a bit of expense. IMHO...WAAAY worth it. They're one of the only animals I actually get on the floor with and act like a complete idiot just to make them laugh!

What takes the most time with ferrets and what are the expenses? I know they have to get annual shots like dogs, right? What other expenses are there? I'm curious because I always thought they looked like a ton of fun to have!

They get the high quality ferret foods @ anywhere between $7 and $15 a 4lb bag. You can also use the best quality kitten chow for them. You always want a variety so that if the store doesn't have one brand you always have the backup of another. Ferrets don't like change much so if you start out with more variety you have better chances of always having something for them. I use between 2-3 different brands. And TOYS! Hammocks...accessories of that nature. Then there are the geriatric years. These are where the costs really come in. I have had 9 ferrets in the past 3+ yrs. Two have died from cancers, but not before the vet bills could incur. I have another needing adrenal surgery. He is showing the classic hair loss and I can feel the mass in his abdomen. American ferrets are weak ferrets as far as serious illnesses go. Call it poor breeding practices. European ferrets don't have nearly the troubles ours do. They take their breeding more seriously. Like any other animal...do some serious research first to find out if you can fit a ferret in at any certain time you think you're ready. www.ferretcentral.org/www.ferret.org/index.htm
