The bulb that i got in the summer I believe, maybe later then that has been randomly turning off and on. I know that is usually the sign of bad bulb, I know the ballast is just a transformer, or perhaps something is going wrong with the socket, if it is the actual bulb, grrr. Maybe I should just get the self ballasted lamps they sell at a local exotics shop, those are about $39 as opposed to $56

If the bulb is malfunctioning why not exchange it?

Thing is, it took them almost a month to ship it, and it was about $56 ($10 shipping). They do have a store here that sells Mercury vapor lamps that do not require a ballast, but those ones get hotter, maybe I am a little apprehensive about that.

RaptonX, I had a suggestion for you, but it looks like they're no longer available. I've been using the UVB Mystic from Big Apple Herpetological, but it looks like their store has changed ownership and gone main-stream, so they sell the usual stuff now. Good thing I stocked up on them, because they are excellent lamps. They provide plenty of UVB, so much that its important that you only use them in a large enclosure and have a minimum of 18 inches between them and the basking platform...as well as lots of natural shady spots where your ig can go. You also have to provide lots of bright, white light from another source. They do this with very little heat, and they last A LONG TIME. I've been using them since 2006, without a single failure. I tried the MegaRay for about 6 weeks, and really wasn't impressed with the quality (the first one failed in less than two weeks)...and the amount of heat they produce was a BIG problem. If I find where the Mystics are being sold still, I'll let you know.

I never had issues with the megaray except that is has jumped in price so much over the past couple years. I have tried a couple other brands but they tend to burn out in about 3 months.

It could be that maybe the bulbs are fine and that your lamp hardware is faulty in such a way that you may have a slight short causing the bulbs life to become reduced. Or you may have a short somewhere in the house circuit as well. Just throwing that out there as I have come across this myself as a electrician.
