Hi I'm ej from South Korea. I'm very glad to know this gorgerous forum before I start this, please understand my awful english writing. Cuz I'm not good at english so I'd like to excuse for this.. I have one female iggy named plumpy. she's 2years old girl. she had eaten anything three times a day any food before she was first gravid but during her gravid, she wouln't eat anything by herself so I had to feed her forcebly... I found her gravid starting last october luckily she only wanted to eat repcal iguana food by herself during her gravidness but only small quantity once a day..
As Time went on.. and a few month ago I found she was absorbing her eggs when i saw her doctor to check she's fine. But I couldn't feel a real sense of relief because she is not gravid for now, but she doesn't want to eat her foods and her belly still looks so pumped. Doctor said to me "her health is fine now" but I'm still worried about her health she hasn't eaten her foods by herself for about 1years and I have fed her forcibly for about 1years too.. i'm most worried that her second period of gravidness is coming back. (sept~oct).. Is this normal for iguanas not to eat foods by themselves while female iguanas are absorbing their eggs? and should i have to keep feeding her forcebly? (also she really wants to eat meats, eggs or bread for human even though she's not interested into any vegetables and fruits ) and I don't know what to do If she will be gravid while she's now absorbing her eggs.. please, help me. there is no place in South Korea I should ask for helps for my iggy plumpy
this is my iguana's instagram page:http://www.pikore.com/the_plumpy( the way I can show you my iggy's status)

Hello and welcome, Ej I'm sorry to hear plumpy has been having eating issues for so long. Giving her any type of meat or egg is not the answer - those should be avoided at all cost. Some iguanas may want to eat stuff like that but it is not good for them at all. Bread on the other hand can be an ok treat. My iguana, Gwendolyn, does not always want to eat a whole lot either but the vets don't see anything to be concerned about that may be causing it. When Gwen doesn't feel like eating a whole lot what I generally do is add more color to her dish and put a couple extra treats in like strawberries, watermelon, bananas, soaked wheat bread (no seeds in the bread - just plain wheat bread). She is always more inclined to eat more if the dish is extra tasty. How do you force feed her? What kind of foods do you feed her on a regular basis? Repcal is not the way to go for a regular diet but I can understand your desperation to find something that she is willing to eat. If you do feed her Repcal every once in awhile I would recommend only small portions and soak it first to add more moisture to it; again it should be used sparingly and not a regular thing. When females are gravid and their bellies are full of eggs it is common for them to not eat a whole lot but after they are no longer gravid their appetite should increase again. It's not good if they stop eating while they are gravid but they are going to eat less and I would encourage adding more treats to their regular greens when this happens - especially juicy fruits and things like watermelon so they don't get dehydrated. I have a spray bottle that I mist Gwendolyn with and generally when I do that she starts licking so I spray water in her mouth and she drinks it - I have found that to be a good way to increase her hydration as well. How much water does she drink?-Jenna

Thank you so much for your kind reply Ms.Jenna I know that any meat and eggs can cause desease to iggys.. But I had to feed her because her healthless look made me desperated and sad.. She used to eat a lot before her first gravidness. that's why I'm more worried about her. I always hope she get an good appetite like she used to.. I tried adding color to her foods with kiwi, blueberry, mango, colorful pepper, apples and any other fruits but it never worked.. , I do force her to open her mouth and feed foods everyday.. ( I usally force feed her zucchini, dendalions, mustard grrens, chicory and bok choy) she never swallow and just spit them out. she drinks 60cc water mixed calcium a day,( i also fed her water forcebly. Jenna, have you ever seen female iggys abosrb their own eggs ? I do really want to know why she don't want to eat foods by herself execpt for meat or bread even though she gonna decide not to lay her eggs and to abosorb her eggs... again...I'm sorry for my awful english I don't really wanna give up her.. she's like my half and daughter. May I bother you to explain this to me.. if you don't mind.. you are my only hope now..

Well you are most welcome, Ej - and don't worry about your English it's really not that bad. I fully understand your concern for her so at this point I'm going to give you another resource: herpcenter.com/reptile-forums/green-iguanas.166/The Herp Center is a great website (Herpetology: the study of reptiles and amphibians). They have very active forums with lots of knowledgeable iguana owners I recommend taking a look at their site, they have some great resources. This situation is a little beyond just what I can help with. My iguana has actually never laid eggs; I got her when she was 8 and she is now 17 (nearly 18). I've taken her to the vet multiple times and each time she is ok. I know you are desperate to help her but don't feed her any more meat, that is not the answer. I very much appreciate the care you have for your iguana, plumpy. The people from the Herp Center will be able to more accurately, and with more depth, be able to answer your questions.

Hi Eujin! Welcome to IZ! How long has your iguana had these issues? Can you post pics of her environment and maybe tell us the temperatures? Its not uncommon for an iguana to not want to eat if she isn't warm enough. She should have access to an area she can warm her body to 95-96 degrees Fahrenheit...and she should eat just fine. See...she can't properly digest her food unless her body temp is in that range. So, if its not in that range, she usually isn't going to be hungry. That being said...since you mentioned a year of her not eating without being force-fed...you should NEVER force-feed a gravid iguana. Do you have any pics you could share? I have a 15 year old female who has been through this for several years...and a 24 year old male who just loves bein an iguana. The not wanting to eat just sounds like she might not be warm enough. Let us know.

thank you for your kind reply! My iggy haven't eaten any food by herself for about 1year. (from last sept) it's about 90-95 degrees Fahrenheit in her cage. That sounds really great that you have two amazing iggys that live life together. they seem like more than just pets but like soul mates or true family. I attached pics of my iggy plumpy that stays in her cage..

Thank you for posting the pictures, Ej, and sorry for the delay in responding. That looks like a cozy set-up you have for her but it is much too small. She is going to need a much bigger and taller enclosure to call home. Is there any more room in the enclosure, or is that all the space she has? In the wild iguanas can climb trees for safety so to an iguana height = security. If she gets too warm and wants to move somewhere else, what are the low temps in the enclosure? Does she have any consistent access to water? How often does she come out of the enclosure? What do you do with her when you take her out of the enclosure? Do you have any other pets? Thats a lot of questions but it will help us analyze her situation better

She has more space under the box that she lies on her belly in pics I posted.. There's a box(size: 20x20x30(in)) she can rest or be ready to lay her eggs.. I put a water bowl every morning with clean water beside her But I've never seen she tries to drink water in the bowl so I force feed her water three times a day.. She can't come out of her home because I lock the door of her encloure before going to work. after work I set her free out of the enclosure and bathe with her I have one turtle except for my iggy plumpy. I bought a nutribac yesterday to boost her appetite ( I'm so desperated..indeed ) Do you think it gonna work to my iggy? I'm sorry for late replies..sounds likethe excuse but It's really hard for me to write sentences in english PS. I hope all igs in the world are happy and healthy!
