Excellent choices reptileman! Go easy on the banana, but it makes a fine treat a couple of times a month...:-)

If you have at least 5-6 items...keeping the collard, mustard and turnip greens always the same and rotating the others...you will have a fairly good variety. The more the better, but the smaller the ig the harder it is to do that without it going bad first.

You didn't pay attention... 85% greens-10% veggies-5% fruit. Three of the items need to be greens. Dandelion is a good green, so if you like...you can replace either the mustard or turnip greens with it. Do not replace the collard greens. Then add 2-3 other healthy items. Fruits are only occasional items and tomatoes should never be fed at all. Your list should look something like this: collard greens turnip greens mustard greens (or dandelion greens) green beans butternut squash red bell pepper OR collard greens dandelion greens (or turnip greens) mustard greens parsnips acorn squash yellow bell pepper Use fruits only as a treat. if you get a baby...they rarely eat fruit anyway, but you can offer some. Usually after they've eaten some good stuff already. Bananas are not a good food either. This is a once a month - just a couple of bites. Here's a website to look through and check out their diet guide: www.greenigsociety.org There is a wonderful list that will tell you what is a staple food item that you can feed all the time, occasional foods that can be fed once in awhile, and never foods because they are harmful. The key is variety. Keeping the greens the same and rotating the other items will offer a variety in taste...and offer slightly different nutritional needs. As for how much and how often. How much is as much as the ig can eat in a day. That's something you'll learn when A) the food is all gone and it's looking for more, B) there is food left over. You'll figure out the balance... ;D. As for how often. I leave one large plate in there all day long. Others prefer to feed once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I prefer the all day method since igs are naturally grazers. Zair will eat a large amount in the morning, but with what's left he will nibble on throughout the rest of the day.

Dandelions carrots peppers water cress onions mushrooms grapes bananas apples collard greens
if i alternate the diet with all of this but keeping the dandelions and collard greens will this suffice?

Close, but not quite. Choose only one fruit...leave the bananas out.
Dandelions (excellent) collard greens (excellent) water cress (excellent) peppers (good) carrots (replace with parsnips. Healthier-look like white carrots) onions (bad! can be toxic and not even on the chart) mushrooms (small amounts) grapes (small amounts) bananas (rarely) apples (small amounts)

right that website you told me to go on told me onions were ok.carrots can be swapped no problem.
i will now feed:
Dandelions collard greens water cress peppers parsnips mushrooms (every now and then) grapes (every now and then) bananas (as a treat) apples (every now and then)
all of this diet stuff is starting to bug me.
right lets get this straight im 16 will proberbly go to the shop to buy the food freshly, some of this stuff ...i havent got a clue what it is (inc. collard greens) but i will have to find it.all i want to know is a basic diet that will be excellent all of the time and i will vary it with other things.i dont want to be emptying my fridge everytime i go to feed the ig.i want a min of 3 different thins on the list and i want a maximum of about 6. so will Dandelions collard greens water cress peppers parsnips
be fine for an all the time diet?
i will obv vary it from day to day.
sorry if i sound like i am having a dig at you all but it is really frustrating , all i want is a basci diet i dont want all this (feed as a treat) stuff yet or (everynow and then) i will get to that when i have had the ig. for a month or so.
sorry for any upset but i need to voice my opinions or it just builds up and stresses me.
thanks anyway

Ghost, what you have listed is a good diet, but you must realize it cannot be the only list of items your iguana ever eats. Variety is key over the many years you and this animal should share together. I got Hercules as a young, recent, college grad, and he is still with me 13 years later. I am looking forward to many more years with him in the future. Let us know what is available to you at the shop, and we can tell you if its ig-friendly or not. Like it or not, when your ig grows up, you'll be buying food for him/her more often than you do for yourself. You will find that a healthy, adult iguana, actually consumes more food than a healthy, adult, male human...and if you have a female iguana, she'll eat even more. Heh...no reading of magazines and wanting to be "skinny" like the "it girls" for the female ig...she just wants to be healthy so she can lay her eggs. So she eats...LOTS. Just to give you an idea of what you might be getting into, I have two adult iguanas, a male and a female. I spend, easily, $30 every 4 days on feeding them.

i will vary it but i just want a basic diet for the time being just while i get used to actually having an ig. to look after ... if you tell me what i can add to my list then i will tell you if my shop has it or not... is that ok with you mate?
